The Harmony Test is a non-invasive prenatal test that can be carried out after 10 weeks of pregnancy. It is a blood test that analyses the DNA from the baby that circulates in the mother’s blood. This test has no risk to the baby and has a detection rate of 99% for Down syndrome. The test is also useful for the detection of Edward’s and Patau’s syndrome as well as conditions affecting the sex chromosomes X and Y. Although the Harmony test is good for screening several key chromosomal conditions, it does not rule out all fetal abnormalities. At TFP Belfast Fertility, the Harmony blood test includes a detailed ultrasound scan. You will be seen by Dr John Manderson or Dr Stephen Ong. Both are Fetal Medicine Consultants and highly skilled in ultrasound. Unlike other units in Belfast, at TFP Belfast Fertility, we have the ability to make a referral for further testing (such as amniocentesis), in the event that your test is abnormal.
The Evolve prenatal test is also a non-invasive prenatal test. In addition to screening for Down’s, Edward’s and Patau’s syndrome, it can also screen for several other genetic problems called microdeletions. Before you have such a test, we would recommend that you have a detailed discussion with Dr Manderson or Dr Ong about the advantages and disadvantages of the test. The Evolve test includes an ultrasound scan.
The testing is non-invasive: it involves taking a blood sample from the mother. The pregnancy is not put at risk of miscarriage, or from other adverse outcomes that are associated with invasive testing procedures such as amniocentesis.
The Harmony test is suitable for a wide range of pregnancies. For women undergoing IVF treatment, or having a child in later life, a prenatal test that offers near 100% accuracy in the diagnosis of congential conditions can provide great reassurance. The Harmony test is suitable for:
